Commentary/Column

Little Brother is probably  my favorite group of artists in Hip-Hop. Despite their recent disbanding, Little Brother has seen their fair share of ups and downs. In 2003 they bursted into the industry with their arguable classic titled “The Listening”. With their second debut album, “The Minstrel Show”, they were dropped from the Atlantic Record company as they refused to promote another one of their singles. Their album sales flopped and 9th Wonder (their lead producer) jumped ship. A story too sad, and too true to spread the fact that Little Brother is the real deal. In the words of their cover track, The Listening:

“This is a message for our people chasing benjamins
With real rhymes and skills they believing in
Keeping them bad tapes rolling like michellin
it don’t matter, cause ni**** ain’t listening
They ain’t listening, they thinkin bout they Timbalands
They say the shit we talk about ain’t interestin’
We got a better chance of blowing up in Switzerland
Holla if you hear it cause ni**** ain’t listening”

They ain’t listenin’.

Take a listen to my favorite of every Little Brother releases, Mixtape: Chitlin Circuit 1.5 and listen. You’ll understand why it, and they, are my favorite in Hip-Hop.

Rewrites, Re-do’s, and Make-up Work

So after looking over my WordPress blog, I realized I had an unpublished post, which was all of my rewrites, and other work I submitted on my blog.

I must have saved it as a draft and never published it.

Here is a copy of everything that I’ve done in the past week.
Thank you.

According to San Mateo Police Captain Kevin Nguyen, the container truck “apparently had some type of mechanical failure” while it was coming down 43rd Avenue, a residential street that dead-ends in a Mollie Stone’s grocery store parking lot.

Devils Slide Short Story

A man used his cell phone to dial 911 after driving his vehicle off of a 150-foot cliff. Suffering only minor head injuries, the 24-year-old motorist whose name has not been released, drove his car off of Devil’s Slide landing on its wheels.

The man, heading toward San Francisco, missed his turn due to dense fog. Luckily, the car landed on its wheels.

They pulled up the man in a protective cage after rappelling off the cliff. It took California Highway Patrol 45 minutes to find the man due to the fog.

“He did what he was supposed to do; he wore his seat belt,” said CHP Sgt. Trent Ross, who added that if the driver hadn’t been wearing his seat belt during the accident, “there is no doubt it would have been fatal.”

Background: More Than Just a Word

Whether it is in the present or past, in one country or another, the conditions of living are ultimately different for every story. Whether it’s the socioeconomic standard, or oppression from forces political or religious, everyone has lived life differently. It is the experiences that we live through, either positive or negative that define what we come to know as our background.

Aaron Inciong, son of two Filipino refugee’s, shared his living experience growing up in the Philippines compared to life in the United States.

As a little boy, Inciong received a big allowance from his parents, an allowance that was two peso. The exchange rate during that time was, two peso for every one US dollar.

This money would be spent gambling placing bets on ‘spider fights’ held by the local kids in the neighbor hood. “We never knew who came up with having two spiders fight on sticks.” Inciong said.

Growing up in the 60s, there many things that Inciong remembers about he brought to his very own family in the United States. One tradition that he still keeps to this day is a Sunday lunch with his entire family. From his immediate to extended family, everybody gathers on Sunday for a lunch at his house.

“Being family oriented is very important to people in the Filipino culture.” Inciong said.

During the 1970s, the Philippines was ran by dictator Ferdinand Marcos through Martial Law. “Though my family wasn’t very political.” Inciong said. “We decided to immigrate to the United States for a more promising future.”

Escaping political corruption, Inciong came to the United States to study business at San Francisco State University. “My father always had a business mindset.” Inciong said.

He dropped out after his second year to create his own travel agency business. His venture became very lucrative and paved the way for him in the United States to become successful.

Copy Edit the World

Hey Professor,

I realized you didn’t collect the last pts for CETW so I just took pictures of them.

The error in this picture is in the suffix after the date. It should just be 10, and 14, without the “th”

In this image, the months should be abbreviated to a 3-letter word.

In APStyle, it strictly says that you only capitalize every word of something if it is a proper name. If that was the case, then the fourth bullet point “Help to get off probation” should have been in all caps as well.

Gordon Greb inspires students in the school of JMC

“Take care of the children, and we’ll be alright’” said Gordon Greb. “These were my last words as a professor at San Jose State University.”

Ninety-year-old Greb came to speak to a group of students on his birthday. Considered to be a legend within the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, Greb spoke on his life experiences and journey through the industry of journalism.

Sharing his experiences that he had overseas, and around the country, Greb explained how San Jose was the birth place of radio broadcasting.

“It began right here in San Jose.” said Greb. He explained how Charles David Herrold was the founder of radio broadcasting. “San Jose had the first broadcasting station in the world.”

Greb continued to share his experiences until student Tatian O. had a question to ask. “Where do you see the industry going from where it was to now?”

Gordon explained how in his entire life, he was surrouned by media and mass media getting his first experience as a boyscout. He aspired to become the editor for the Boyscout newspaper titled “The Cats Meow”. He then turned the question back onto Tatian and asked him where he thought the industry was going.

“Learn by heart means to love what you’re doing” explained Greb. This is what he learned during his Ph.D candidacy at Stanford. This is one message he left for aspiring journalism students at San Jose State University.
